Behind The Curtain: Misconceptions of the Escort Industry

Published on 4 April 2023 at 11:51

Interesting, isn't it, how we are quick to stereotype and generalize an entire profession based on some shady stories we've heard? It's similar to labeling all chefs as 'hot-tempered because of Gordon Ramsay' or viewing every lawyer as a 'clever strategist due to the character Saul Goodman!' Sounds absurd, doesn't it?

Let's address a common misunderstanding - 'escort work'. It's not all negativity, for many it's just another job like any other. It involves professionalism and skills.

Let's value us for providing companionship. Plus, we often have a regular client base. Intriguing, isn't it? :)

Myth: ALL ESCORTS ARE PRESSURED INTO THIS WORK

Contrary to what some cinematic portrayals might have you believe, not every escort is a damsel in distress. Many escorts are in fact, very much in control of their lives and their work. We choose when we work, who we work with, the services we provide, and for what rate. The next time you visualize an escort as a person in fishnets, appearing sad by a rain-soaked window, instead picture a smart businessperson. Now that's more like it, isn't it?

Myth: ESCORTS LACK EDUCATION AND CAREER CHOICES

Could it be possible that the escort you're hastily pre-judging has a degree in Astrophysics? Yes. Many escorts possess impressive academic achievements and vast knowledge in various subjects. We are well-read, worldly, and often specialize in various fields outside of our chosen profession. Yes, shocker right?

But it's true. Many escorts view their profession as a choice, as liberating even. The freedom to set our own hours, determine our rates, and pick our clientele is an alluring alternative to the rigid structure of a conventional career. Certainly, it's not a career path suited for all, but who are you to judge or restrict our preferred way of life? Besides, for some, escorting can also work as a lucrative side gig, a stepping stone on route to their dreams - be it starting their own business or pursuing higher education.

The point is, there's a lot more autonomy in it than you might first think. Dive into this study about how many other escorts have other sources of income and engage in sex work as a way to secure a stable financial life and gain independence. It's no secret that the ever-rising expenses of everyday life and the pursuit of one's aspirations can be overwhelming today.

Myth: ESCORTS ENGAGE IN ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES

Receipt? Forget about the receipt. And, let's not kid ourselves, you're probably not itching to sketch 'escort services' on your tax return line, huh?

But take a look around globally, and you might be surprised to find that sex work, including prostitution, is either legal or not actively pursued by law enforcement. A considerable number of countries have paved the path for sex work, either by legalizing it or, at the very least, turning a blind eye. Whether escorts are operating independently or under some kind of a legal jurisdiction, they are not necessarily breaking any laws. Check out this cool visualization of how sex work is regulated around the world.

Thankfully, I live in a country where individual sex work, such as prostitution, is decriminalized and a part of grey economy, while organized activities like brothels and pimping remain illegal. Additionally, I have the assurance that if I ever face harassment or threats, I can seek assistance from law enforcement, and they are obligated to provide support.

Myth: SEX ALWAYS HAPPENS

One of the largest misconceptions widespread in society is the notion that the main, or even the sole, interest of clients is sex. However, the reality is strikingly diverse. Clients come with a wide range of desires and needs, not confined to sexual intimacy. Many people hire escorts for social gatherings or casual meets, often just needing someone to listen and help them alleviate their concerns and inner struggles. The world of the escort industry extends far beyond physical attraction.

Interestingly, from my experiences, clients who do not solely seek physical intimacy often happen to be the most wealthy ones (once or twice he probably was in a B club, I think :)). Additionally, they are typically the most loyal customers over time. Furthermore, should I choose to travel to certain countries, I always have genuine invitations from individuals eager to host me and guide me around their city. It's an aspect worth considering.

Myth: WE ONLY SELL OUR BODY

Does a chef merely sell their cooking skills? Absolutely not! They trade their time, creativity, culinary expertise, and passion for providing unforgettable culinary experiences. In a similar vein, escorts offer a professional service that is versatile, extending beyond the physical aspect. The client could be a millionaire tech mogul or a common man with a modest income. We don't do a credit check before offering empathy and companionship or sex. We meet a range of client needs, encompassing emotional, psychological, and social aspects as well as physical. We offer companionship, understanding, or a willing ear, all delivered with utmost professionalism.

While it's true that physical intimacy can be a part of an escort's service, it certainly isn't the only aspect.

Conclusion

Let's finish with understanding that like any profession, being an escort comes with its own set of diverse skills and complex stories. It's time to drop the stereotypes and respect people's career choices. After all, the escort industry, just like any other, is multifaceted and varied. And although the truth may not be as sensational as some misconceptions, it certainly holds more value for an open mind.
